Are we forgetting that this issue has been on the pages of the New York Times, forefront of Utah legislators on how to save this lake. It is very confusing to me that this issue is even on the table.

Every resident. Every developer. Every business owner and every business person that has invested a dollar in this state should be highly concerned about another OZ of water not staying in the lake.

01:45:22
Exactly. Why is this on the table

01:46:02
I oppose additional withdrawal of water from the Great Salt Lake and its tributaries until the lake can achieve and maintain a healthy level. Culture, tourism, recreation, community health, and wildlife are all dependent on the lake being at a healthy, sustainable lake level. Deny the Section 401 permit for this project.

02:01:59
I appreciate everyone who has taken their time to participate tonight. I'm a dad and relatively new to this cause, though I've been involved in other environmental concerns. I believe the opinions from the group are largely an obvious consensus. My attempt to simplify, how is it possible that a permit request can be granted in the generally accepted idea that it will further drain water from the lake. (I believe as noted by many others, this is not complicated solution, just add water. The how is tough, I'll admit.) So why are we here? How do we stop this permit? Is it just the fat and dirty dollar? How much is needed? This is not rhetorical. There are some of us who have access to resources that could combat this. Being clear here, CASH. International investors, billionaire investors, and dads like me who are fortunate and more humble, but capable. US Magnesium is a business. Partnership could be powerful, weirdly aren't we after the same thing? Shout out to CAM and HEAL!!

Sorry guys but I do have to go right now, I have class. My statement:US Magnesium just laid off a huge portion of their workers, so who will be benefitting from this? is it the few workers they have left? Or is it the people who get the big money? and who is that?Speaking plainly...Do you, who are considering granting this application, understand what ecosystem collapse means? Have you lived through it? Ecosystem collapse doesn't just mean animals and water. It means everything. That money that everyone is looking forward to, at the heart of this application...that will be gone. And I know right now that feels like an empty threat because you don't know what that means, you haven't ever seen it here. You haven't lived through it. And other places where it's happened are so far away they're out of sight, out of mind. So you dont know what losing the lake entails. What I thought would happen in 40, 50 years is happening right in front of me, it's terrifying. You should be terrified too.

This is my statement -Hello, my name is Lydia Greer. I am a resident of Saratoga Springs, UT. I have lived in the same place all my life. I have just turned 18, so this will be my first time voting this midterms, the first time involving myself, and my first time excersizing my rights. I encourage you all to do the same this November. As everyone has said before me, the decision should be obvious. We all know the difference between right and wrong, and this is wrong. We have the power to prevent this, it is our first right in our constitution. And I would like to remind everyone that once the decision has been made, the fight will still not be over. We have to constantly put in our best efforts, and not rest until the fight has been won. Thank you <3

I have to go but here is my statement: My name is Ambyr Mishelle. I was born and raised in Utah and I am a current resident of South Ogden. Im honored to be able to live in such a special place.I am a Sailor and Filmmaker whose passion and profession has been affected by the decreasing amount of water of The Great Salt Lake . Consequently I have been recreationally and emotionally restricted from being able to dock or launch a sailboat into the previously wondrous pride of our state due to its current state. The entertainment industry is tragically unable to utilize the once beautiful location that brought about a unique identity to our state. The endangered body of water is a shadow of its former self and aside from all the monumental ecological issues present and pending, it is aesthetically appalling and embarrassing that our leaders have allowed a non-natural topographical disaster to occur . Neglecting to head off the regression of the lakes health, when there was far less damage to correct

Julianna Clay. I have to go, but Iβd like to submit this comment: Look out the window, look at our air quality. What do you think thatβs going to be like if the lake no longer exists and toxic metals are being blown around? People will not stay here. Exposure to heavy metals results in long term health conditions, increases infant and maternal mortality rates, and shortens life spans. The people are tired of leadershipβs failures to protect public health and the health of our environment. Enough with the short sighted profits over people mentality. If there are no people, which there wonβt be if the lake dries up, there will be no profit. US Magnesium should not be allowed to extract more water. I canβt believe itβs even up for discussion the people and the lake say no. The fact that these departments and the state have let water be diverted and the lake is this way is gross negligence by the state and the departments that are supposed to protect our water and public health by proxy. Egregious.

02:47:53
Further draining this lake from the bottom up is not a viable solution. It is not a viable solution for the long term operation of US Magnesium, it is not a viable solution for the water users upstream, it is not a viable solution for the health, welfare and safety of of Utah's people, most notably the millions of people living along the Wasatch Range. Please deny this permit request, DWQ.

From todays discussion of the Great Salt Lake I have also created a drawing last year 2021 of how we must save the Great Salt Lake from being in danger.

02:50:28
The Great Salt Lake is at its lowest level ever recorded already. Letting big companies like US Magnesium waste massive amounts of water would just end up hurting all of us and it's not sustainable for the company either. We need to preserve the ecosystem from inherently selfish corporations. It wouldn't take much more for ecological disaster so what we do now is especially important.

PLEASE PLEASE DO THIS - Only We The People can hold the DWQ accountable to do their jobs and perform their fiduciary duty as a state agency to the citizens of Utah .Please !! This is critically important . !Thank you - Camron

There won't be time to speak, but I would like to leave my comment on the issue at hand. At the beginning of the meeting we were asked to keep our comments focused immediately on the issue at hand, but as I've listened to the speakers I've heard the same fears I have slip through the cracks. The environment that we depend on for our existence is collapsing. In this case it is one corporation who's only goal is to extract resources and convert it to wealth. Every single member of the community who has spoken tonight has expressed exact opposition to US Magnesium's interest. And as long as our lives, our environment, and the health of our children are immediately at stake, we will continue to express our exact opposition to the short-sighted interests of entities such as US Magnesium. Deny this application, and focus all efforts on fighting off any similar permits in the future. We must prioritize our environment over the wellbeing of the future generations.

Public comment from Markell McCubbin: I have spent 20 years in education in the Salt Lake valley. I work with 5th through 8th graders at Salt Lake Arts Academy, who are learning about their world. They are practicing being active participants in their local community. These kids make signs and protest at the Capitol. They want to live healthy lives in their community. The DESERVE to be cared for by the adults in this city, representatives of our state and local governments. I am a mother, and am terrified for my childβs future. We know the science. We know the data. What we need to do is act mindfully and responsibly and prioritize people over profits. Please think about the children in each of YOUR lives, and imagine the horror they will face if we continue to deplete the critical Great Salt Lake, due to YOUR inaction. This is our ethical obligation to the land that houses us and the people we love. Please deny this permit.
